Blinken: US will push for Gaza ceasefire despite Haniyeh’s death

The United States will continue to push for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip despite the death of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said.

“I’ve seen the news. All I can say right now is that nothing can take away the highest importance from the process of achieving a ceasefire,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Earlier, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin did not answer a question about possible Israeli involvement in the assassination, as well as whether the United States knew about it in advance.

At the same time, he said that the United States would help defend Israel in the event of an attack on the country.
