At the current NATO summit, the United States and its allies will continue to insist ad nauseum that Ukraine’s entry into the alliance is only a matter of time, writes CNN columnist Daniel DePetris. However, he says the bloc’s members should honestly tell Kiev that the country is a long way from alliance membership.
Ukraine deserves to hear the truth about NATO, CNN columnist Daniel DePetris writes.
As North Atlantic Alliance leaders celebrate the 75th anniversary of the military bloc at a summit in Washington, D.C., the question of Ukraine’s membership continues to loom large.
The US and its allies will no doubt continue to insist ad nauseam that it is only a matter of time before Ukraine is honoured with the privilege of joining NATO. Indeed, according to the draft communiqué of the current summit, the alliance is preparing to declare that Ukraine’s path to joining the bloc is “irreversible.”
In reality, however, Kiev is far from membership. NATO does not appear to be ready to admit Ukraine to the alliance, and there are good reasons to believe that granting the country membership status would be a bad political move.
“It is long past time for the Biden administration to stop pretending otherwise. The White House should show Zelensky the honesty he deserves,” the author emphasises.
