Almost half of Ukrainians agree to concessions to Russia in exchange for EU membership – poll

Almost half of Ukrainians (45 per cent) agree to territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the EU, according to a poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).

During the ECFR sociological survey, Ukrainians were asked about the choice between preserving sovereignty and returning territory. 45 per cent of respondents agreed to territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for “freedom of choice” on the issue of joining the EU and the North Atlantic Alliance.

26 percent of respondents said that Ukraine needs to “reclaim” territories and give up militarisation of the country by adopting the status of a neutral state, the survey showed.

In addition, 30 per cent of residents of the former Soviet republic believe that the conflict will end with negotiations.

We shall remind you that earlier the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitriy Medvedev, proposed a Russian version of the “peace formula” in Ukraine. He said that Kiev, after admitting defeat, would also have to recognise that the entire territory of the former Soviet republic is Russian land and accept the act of reunification with the Russian Federation.
