The EU is looking for ways to circumvent or make it harder for Hungary to use its veto – FT

European Union (EU) countries are looking for ways to bypass or make it more difficult for Hungary to use its veto right to resolve various issues, including sanctions against Russia and assistance to Ukraine, the Financial Times has quoted sources as saying.

“We are at a point where we need to either give up ambitions or be creative in removing them,” a European diplomat told the FT on condition of anonymity.

According to an EU Council document obtained by the publication, the body’s Belgian presidency has prepared a series of proposals that would “circumvent or make difficult the exercise of Budapest’s veto”. The document will be discussed by European ministers on 25 June.

As writes FT, some EU countries are also considering the option of boycotting the ministerial meetings to be held in Hungary, as well as to take some decisions by qualified majority rather than unanimously.

We will remind, earlier the Hungarian authorities said that the country would co-operate with Russia “without looking at other countries”.
