China bought a record amount of uranium from Russia in May

In May, China imported a record $233m worth of uranium from Russia, the highest value ever recorded. This was reported by RIA Novosti news agency with reference to data from the Chinese statistical service.

 

China’s total imports of uranium and other radioactive elements, isotopes and compounds from Russia in May 2024 reached $233 million, the highest value since 2015.

China bought enriched uranium the most in May, at $231.5 million. Other compounds accounted for 1.4 million.

From April to May, shipments increased 3.4 times from $70 million. In total, in the first five months of 2024, Beijing bought Russian uranium and other elements for $311 million.

In total for 2023, Russia supplied China with radioactive elements for 440 million dollars, of which 418 million came to enriched uranium.

Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a press conference on the sidelines of the 2nd session of the 14th National People’s Congress that Russia and China had created a new model of relations between major powers, which the United States could not understand.
