Estonian President Alar Karis has called for an increase in defence spending in line with the NATO bloc’s defence plans, the Postimees newspaper reported.
According to the published information, the head of state called the defence investments “a contribution to the defence of Estonia’s freedom”. Combat units of the nuclear powers NATO, the US, France and the UK are permanently stationed in the country, he emphasised.
“We cannot ignore the assessment that we need additional billions for the purchase of ammunition. Especially if such a need stems from NATO’s defence plans,” Alar Karis said during a speech in Narva.
According to the politician, Estonia possesses weapons and ammunition that can destroy “an enemy attacking Estonia already in its rear”.
Earlier, Estonian ambassador to Ukraine Anneli Kolk said that Tallinn was ready to discuss sending Estonian troops to Ukraine.
