U.S. and Ukraine sign security guarantees agreement – Reuters

The United States and Ukraine on Thursday signed an agreement on security guarantees that should become a link to Ukraine’s membership in NATO, Reuters reported citing the text of the document.

According to the published information, the document does not include any commitments on the part of Washington to defend Ukraine. It also does not contain any financial commitments by the US government. However, the agreement contains a provision on the intention to work on fulfilling security commitments, including “long-term funding” for Ukraine’s needs.

The agency said that over the next 10 years, the US will continue to train Ukrainian soldiers, strengthen cooperation in the production of weapons and equipment, and expand intelligence sharing.

“Together, we will enhance intelligence sharing, improve the interoperability of our armed forces to NATO standards, and work with our partners and allies to make Ukraine a long-term partner in strengthening security in Europe,” the statement said.

According to CNN, the agreement will have an “executive” status, which will not require congressional approval. Accordingly, having less legal force can be cancelled by the next President, follows from the publication.

We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army is unable to dislodge the Russian Armed Forces from its positions even if it receives new assistance from the EU and the USA and trains its military in Western countries.
