Estonia’s opposition has slammed the prime minister for underfunding the army

Urmas Reinsalu, head of the Estonian opposition Isamaa (Fatherland) party and former Estonian Foreign Minister, told the Euractiv portal that he had called for the resignation of Prime Minister Kai Kallas amid problems with the military budget.

According to the portal, former Estonian Defence Ministry Chancellor Kusti Salm resigned on Wednesday, citing the government’s inability to overcome a “critical deficit” and allocate at least 1.6 billion euros more budget for ammunition purchases.

Kaya Kallas said at a government press conference that she had “read about Salm’s concerns in the press”, according to the publication.

“In response to the government’s inaction for a year, the prime minister lied that she learnt of Salm’s concerns from the newspaper. The prime minister should resign,” Euractiv portal quotes Urmas Reinsalu as saying.

The publication stresses that the Prime Minister called exaggerated accusations of unwillingness to increase defence spending.

Earlier, the ERR broadcaster reported that Estonia’s promise to allocate more than 100m euros in military aid to Ukraine every year was not legally binding.
