Pankin: Western business circles weigh risks of Russia’s asset confiscation

Business circles in Western countries are now weighing all the risks of retaliatory measures in case of confiscation of Russian assets, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said.

The discussion on this topic is being actively promoted in the USA, the EU and other countries, the deputy minister recalled. Moscow regards such steps as a violation of international law.

“More sensible and business circles, political circles are weighing all the risks – including for themselves and the risks of retaliatory measures from our side,” RIA Novosti quoted Pankin as saying.

These retaliatory measures can be both symmetric and asymmetric, the deputy minister stressed, recalling that they can be used through different instruments: legal, financial and administrative.

The Estonian parliament earlier passed a law providing for the legalisation of the use of Russian sovereign assets frozen in the republic “for the reconstruction of Ukraine”.

For her part, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow would strongly respond to the confiscation of its assets by Western countries.
