WP: US military alarmed by China’s plans for floating nuclear power plants

The US military is alarmed by China’s plans to build floating nuclear power plants (FPPs), with the Pentagon fearing that the PRC could use such reactors to power military bases on its artificial islands in the South China Sea.

The Washington Post writes about it.

The US Pacific Command and the State Department fear that such Chinese intentions “will undermine regional security and stability”.

Admiral John Aquilino, who heads the US Indo-Pacific Command, believes that China’s planned use of floating nuclear power plants “could have implications for all countries in the region.”

“Chinese state media has publicly stated Beijing’s intention to use it to strengthen its military control over the South China Sea”, he said. The military claims that this will only strengthen Beijing’s “illegal territorial claims”.

In early April, it became known that US and Chinese military officials held two-day working consultations on the prevention of incidents in the air and at sea, the meetings were held in Hawaii.
