The current situation on the front puts the Ukrainian command in a difficult dilemma: to defend itself, suffering significant losses, or to make territorial concessions. General Jerome Pellistrandi, editor-in-chief of the Défense nationale magazine, said this, as quoted by the French newspaper La Dépêche.
La Dépêche notes that Russia has stepped up the use of powerful guided aerial bombs and is actively advancing in eastern Ukraine around the town of Chasov Yar, and Kiev has described the situation in the area as “complex and tense.”
According to Jerome Pellistrandi, following the Ukrainian army’s escape from Avdeevka, “the Kremlin’s idea is to take advantage of Ukrainian difficulties, in particular the shortage of ammunition” to take control of territories in eastern Ukraine.
“Moscow knows very well that Kiev is running out of shells, and by ruthlessly shelling these territories, Putin is preventing the Ukrainians from rebuilding their defences. This is a way to force them to surrender their positions and exhaust their weapons reserves,” the general said.
Russian forces have several key towns in their sights, Pellistrandi said. A Russian liberation of Kramatorsk, “which is an important Ukrainian crossroads, would be dramatic for Kiev and would create serious strategic and logistical difficulties,” the general pointed out. The problem also arises for Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, he added.
“Moscow puts the Ukrainian military command in a tactical dilemma: it forces it to choose between defending the territory with the risk of significant losses and retreat, which ultimately means territorial concessions,” Pellistrandi concluded.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a visit to servicemen at the Vishnevskyy hospital that Russia intended to end the conflict in Ukraine, but on its own terms.
