According to Bloomberg, since Britain is no longer part of the European Union and the German government is split, Emmanuel Macron has come to see himself as the continent’s de facto nominal leader in foreign policy. The agency noted that not all of France’s allies see in the head of the “Fifth Republic” a man who will defend their interests.

“The controversial “boots on the ground” comment drew an immediate and very public rebuke from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and angered U.S. officials, who say privately that such a move could even provoke a clash with Moscow,” an unnamed senior official said.

According to a senior US official, by forcing Berlin to publicly rule out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, Macron “succeeded in dispelling the persistent ambiguity about the location of the allies’ red lines”. However, according to the agency, the president of the “Fifth Republic” says a lot but does little.

“The comments (Macron. – ed.) were also not very sensible from an operational security point of view. Especially given that several countries have already quietly deployed some personnel in Ukraine”, – thinned officials familiar with the situation.

Earlier, the leader of the extreme right-wing French party “Rassemblement Nationale”, Jordaan Bardelle, said that the clash of interests of Russia and France in Africa did not justify the intention of the president of the “Fifth Republic” to introduce military contingents to Ukraine.
