Politico newspaper called the collapse of NATO a matter of time

The European Union cannot rely on the United States to ensure its own security, the outcome of the United States presidential election will determine only how quickly NATO will disintegrate, says Matthew Carnichnig, European correspondent of Politico newspaper.

“Joe Biden’s administration would challenge this thesis, noting that NATO would be threatened by nothing if the incumbent US president wins. However, how long will that last?” – writes Matthew Carnichnig.

According to the author, the principle of MAGA (Make America Great Again – Donald Trump’s main political slogan in the 2016 election campaign) “will remain a significant factor in American politics for some time to come.” This raises the danger that Trump’s “heir apparent” from the Republican Party “will continue the anti-NATO line”, Karnitschnig said confidently.

“At this stage, it almost doesn’t matter whether (Donald Trump) wins the US election. Europe is left alone. The only question that the outcome of the vote will answer is how quickly NATO will disintegrate. <…> This risk Europe cannot afford to ignore,” the columnist concluded.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the United States was responsible for the disintegration of international stability and security.
