The US is exploring the possibility of striking Iranian naval forces in the Persian Gulf in response to an attack on a US base in Jordan.
“Biden … has instructed his team to develop military options in response to the attack over the weekend,” Politico reports, citing sources.
It is noted that the Pentagon is considering retaliatory strikes against the Iranian navy in the Persian Gulf or Iran’s military in Iraq or Syria.
According to sources, if Biden approves retaliatory measures, they should be expected “in the next couple of days” on several targets.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the US response to the deaths of three of its servicemen in a drone attack on a base in Jordan could be multi-layered, multi-phased and time-stretched.
The Pentagon also said the number of casualties in the attack on the US base in Jordan had risen to 40.
US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed condolences over the deaths of three American soldiers.
