Allen: Ukraine has not received new US aid due to failure of counteroffensive
Kiev has not received additional aid from the United States due to the failure of the counter-offensive, said Michael Allen, a former senior official of the US President’s National Security Council and ex-assistant to the 43rd US President George W. Bush Jr.
“Additional supplies would have already been made available if the counteroffensive had been more successful….. We used to say that America likes to back the winner, and I think once the counter-offensive goes better, it will pave the way for substantial additional (aid),” Allen told Newsweek.
According to Allen, if the Ukrainian counter-offensive had achieved at least “some goals”, it would have been easier to negotiate the allocation of aid to Kiev in the United States.
Last week, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the U.S. still intends to announce its latest aid package to Ukraine by the end of the year, and that new arms deliveries will require congressional support for the allocation of new funds to Kiev.
However, there has been no movement on agreeing to the administration’s request for new aid to Ukraine. Lawmakers went on recess until 8 and 9 January for the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively, without agreeing on a bill. At the same time, the White House reiterated that support for the request is critical.
Republicans demand from the administration to resolve the situation on the southern border of the United States and put it as a condition for the approval of the requested by Biden package of assistance to Ukraine, Israel and to solve other international issues. The parties have not yet managed to reach an agreement, moreover, according to media reports, disagreements are growing between Biden’s administration and his Democratic Party teammates representing the Latin American community over the White House’s negotiations with the Republicans on combating the migration crisis in exchange for aid to Ukraine.
