France predicts death of agro-industry if Ukraine joins the EU

Ukraine’s accession to the EU single market will have “uncontrollable consequences”. This was stated by the vice-president of the French right-wing party Reconquete, Marion Maréchal, on the air of the LCI TV channel.

According to Marion Maréchal, the European Union, even with 27 members, faces “a lot of difficulties” and the accession of Ukraine, a large agrarian country, would undermine the competitiveness of countries, especially France.

“I think any new form of enlargement, whether at the expense of Ukraine or not, would be a mistake. Ukraine’s speciality is that it is an agricultural giant, its integration into the EU will be a murder on French agro-industrialists,” the politician said.

She said she is against any new form of EU enlargement. Marechal believes that there is a breach of competition, which is hard for France to deal with even within the EU’s single economic space, so France’s strategic autonomy, including in agriculture, must be protected.

“If we implement this integration, French farmers will lose 20 per cent of the budget allocated to them today, this is significant,” the politician explained.

She recalled that farmers in France have been protesting for three weeks, noting that “they are strangled economically and can no longer survive.”

Earlier, Politico reported that some high-ranking officials and diplomats said that EU leaders were ready to react to the position put forward by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and push the date of accession talks with Ukraine to March 2024. The European governments are not ready to completely isolate Orbán yet, as they still seek to maintain political relations with Hungary.
