Politico: EU did not support Spain’s idea to hand over profits from Russia’s assets to Kiev

A number of European Union countries did not support Spain’s proposal to use profits from frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.

This is reported by the newspaper Politico with reference to sources.

It is noted that this proposal was discussed by European officials during a meeting of EU representatives. According to Spanish estimates, the profit from the reserves of the Bank of Russia by 2027 could reach up to €17bn.

“Several countries said that Spain’s proposal does not meet the EU’s priority to support Ukraine because Kiev would need months to get this money,” the publication said.

In November, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that freezing Russian assets abroad would not affect Russia’s economy, but Moscow has grounds for action against the assets of G7 countries.

For example, on 1 December, the Russian government withdrew the right to manage Pulkovo airport from foreign companies as part of counter-sanctions.
