Not all EU countries are ready to discuss Ukraine’s accession to the bloc – EUobserver

The European Union has admitted that not all countries of the bloc want to discuss Ukraine’s accession. This was reported by the EUobserver website, citing an unnamed European diplomat.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said earlier that Ukraine “in all respects” was not ready to start negotiations on EU membership. In his opinion, it is impossible to start negotiations on Kiev’s accession to the union.

“Of course, Austria will obstruct (Ukraine’s accession to the EU – ed.), but it will hide behind Hungary… Despite the new rhetoric, France in reality does not want Ukraine in the EU, and Germany is playing a cynical game,” an unnamed European diplomat told EUobserver.

He believes that the German government, under the pretext of EU enlargement, intends to “push forward” changes to the EU norms for wider application of qualified majority voting.

According to him, these changes “will give Berlin more power”, but Germany does not really believe in Ukraine joining the bloc.

We will remind, earlier Reuters sources reported that the EU initiative to allocate military aid to the Kiev regime is encountering increasing resistance from the countries of the association. Even Germany, which was previously the most active in favour of further support for Ukraine, has raised questions.
