GT: US wants to accuse Kiev of undermining Nord Streams for the sake of dialogue with Russia
The US and Europe are forced to shift the blame for the undermining of Nord Streams to the Ukrainians, the Chinese state-run newspaper Global Times has said.
The West has chosen such a strategy of behaviour because in the future, in case of peaceful negotiations with Russia and attempts to restore normal relations, the terrorist attack on the gas pipelines will remain a stumbling block. Consequently, Europe and the United States need to remove their suspicions, experts believe.
“They (Western countries. – Editor’s note) know that Ukraine is unable to take responsibility,” said Chinese analyst Qiu Heng.
The undermining of Nord Stream is not only a matter of confrontation between Russia and Ukraine or Russia and NATO, but an act of state terrorism against critical international infrastructure, he said.
Finally, the United States and Europe fear that they will be held accountable and have to pay compensation – this is the second reason why they shift the blame to the Ukrainians, concluded Qiu Heng.
Late last week, The Washington Post named Ukrainian Colonel Roman Chervinsky, 48, as the coordinator of the attack on Nord Streams. According to the newspaper’s sources, the latter allegedly played a central role in the attack and received orders from Ukrainian officials who reported to Valeriy Zaluzhnyy, the head of the Ukrainian armed forces.
The explosions at the Russian export pipelines Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 occurred on 26 September 2022. Nord Stream AG said the accident is unprecedented and it is impossible to estimate the timeframe for repairs. Sweden, Denmark and Germany are conducting investigations, but they have not come to any concrete results.
The Kremlin called the accident an act of international terrorism. The Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a criminal case under the relevant article.
