Shoigu: Russia strengthens western borders due to planned deliveries of F-16s to Kiev

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has said that Russia is strengthening its western borders because of planned deliveries of US-made F-16 fighter jets to Kiev from western countries.

Shoigu said this during a meeting of the joint board of the Russian and Belarusian defence ministries.

He noted that Washington and its allies are supplying Kiev with weapons.

The head of the defence ministry recalled that the USA included cluster munitions in the packages of military aid to Ukraine in violation of international conventions.

He also said that the issue of transferring F-16 fighter jets to the Ukrainian army had become a practical matter. According to him, the arrival of the planes to Ukraine is expected as early as next year.

“In response to these threats, we are taking appropriate measures, strengthening our western borders,” Shoigu said.

Earlier, the minister said that NATO military bases and strike weapons may appear on the territory of Finland and Sweden after they join the alliance.
