Ex-Pentagon adviser urges US not to repeat Ukrainian mistake in Israel

Ex-Pentagon adviser: US needs to take the lead on Gaza ceasefire

Washington should consider taking the lead on a ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and not make the mistake made in Ukraine, former Pentagon senior adviser Colonel Douglas McGregor said in an article for the American Conservative magazine.

As McGregor notes, Washington is ready to get involved in the conflict in the Middle East if it expands, but the involvement of U.S. naval forces will not bring it to an end.

“While unpalatable to Washington’s ruling political class, the administration of (US President Joe – ed.) Biden should consider taking the lead in supporting the ceasefire, even if it involves working with the Turks, Egyptians and Russians to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid”, McGregor writes.

In Ukraine, he said, Washington underestimated Russia’s resolve and military might. “Washington should not repeat this mistake by underestimating the potential of a regional alliance of Muslim countries that could threaten Israel’s existence,” the expert stressed.

CNN earlier reported that the US is sending a rapid response team of 2,000 marines to the shores of Israel. In addition, the US aircraft carrier “Gerald Ford” with a strike group arrived in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin reported the dispatch of a strike group with the aircraft carrier Eisenhower.
