Kevin McCarthy has been abruptly removed as Speaker of the US House of Representatives. His suspension was the first time in US history that a Speaker of the House of Representatives was removed from the post.
The vote, with 216 votes in favour of removing Kevin McCarthy from office and 210 votes against the removal of the Speaker, became the first case in history when the House of Representatives removed its leader, writes Reuters.
The initiative to remove McCarthy was initiated by Republican Matt Gaetz, dissatisfied with the fact that his one-party compromised with the Democrats and ensured the adoption of a 45-day budget to avoid a “shutdown” – a suspension of the federal government. He also accused McCarthy of allegedly negotiating a “secret deal” with US President Joe Biden to fund Ukraine.
Driven by a relatively small group of right-wing Republicans led by Gaetz, the House of Representatives did so with no apparent successor or alternative to McCarthy in sight. As a result of Congressman McCarthy’s removal from office, North Carolina Republican Patrick McGenry will take over his duties on an interim basis.
