Foreign Ministry: Russia alarmed by US arms deployment plans

Russia is alarmed by the potential escalation in connection with the implementation of US plans to deploy weapons previously banned by the Treaty on Strategic Missile Defence, Deputy Head of the Russian delegation Konstantin Vorontsov said at a meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly.

“The potential escalation as a result of the US plans to deploy weapons that were previously banned under Washington’s denounced RSMD Treaty is deeply alarming,” RIA Novosti quoted Vorontsov as saying.

He noted that the West continues to raise the stakes and is teetering on the brink of a direct conflict between nuclear powers.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a briefing that the United States had begun practising the deployment of missile systems to Europe that were previously banned by the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty).
