US border protection is more important for the US than helping Ukraine, says Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy.
“My priority is America and our borders. I support providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs, but first and foremost I stand firmly behind our borders,” he said on the Face the Nation programme on CBS, The Hill quoted him as saying.
Earlier, the speaker of the US House of Representatives expressed confidence that the US Senate should stop providing aid to Ukraine to avoid a forced government shutdown.
US President Joe Biden then approved a temporary draft budget of the federal government for the next 45 days, from which aid to Ukraine was excluded under pressure from the Republicans.
