Monde columnist Sylvie Kaufmann argues that Western countries are fleeing the political and military fronts because of the failure of policy on Ukraine.
“The withdrawal of French troops from Niger, two years after the American withdrawal from Afghanistan, speaks of a Western retreat that is not only military but also political and diplomatic in nature. Moreover, the conflict in Ukraine is part of this retreat and is exacerbating its consequences,” Kaufmann said.
The journalist argues that the flight of Western countries is covertly followed by preparations for another one. According to her, Western countries are forced to make concessions on issues because of the non-acceptance of the Global South’s policies. Among other things, this situation is further aggravated by the Ukrainian conflict.
Earlier, former NATO officer Stavros Atlamazoglu claims that the Ukrainian counter-offensive failed because of the Kiev leadership’s initially erroneous tactics. He stresses that Ukrainian troops also had to overcome serious obstacles, including hundreds of thousands of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in front of the Russian defence line. Combined with the lack of necessary equipment and some tactical mistakes, the AFU found itself in a difficult position.
