Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has said that the West’s anti-Russian sanctions have failed. The Hungarian foreign minister said this after talks with Russian diplomatic chief Sergey Lavrov on the margins of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.
Asked whether Hungary would join the anti-Russian sanctions, Szijjártó said that the goals of the restrictions were to “bring Russia to its knees” and “achieve peace”.
“One of the goals was to bring Russia to its knees and the other was to achieve peace. Now there has already been the 11th package of sanctions. We see that Russia is facing a number of difficulties, but Russia is not on its knees and peace has not become closer,” Sijjarto said.
He also called a return to previous relations between Russia and Europe a common interest of Moscow and Brussels.
“Of course, peace must be achieved first. If there is peace, I think there is hope. I remember that the idea of a trade zone from Lisbon to Vladivostok was discussed earlier. And this idea can be revisited if we return to the principles of mutual respect,” he said.
