Interruptions in the work of enterprises in the United States due to numerous strikes led to more than 4 million missed working days in the country in August, which is the largest figure for the month since the beginning of the XXI century. About it writes the Wall Street Journal newspaper.
“American workers are striking at a pace not seen in nearly a quarter century… Last month, major work stoppages due to strikes led to 4.1 million missed work days… This preliminary estimate was the largest monthly total since August 2000,” the publication writes, having analysed the latest data from the US Department of Labour.
The number of missed workdays is calculated by multiplying the number of workdays lost in each month due to work stoppages by the estimated number of workers involved. Stoppages include strikes and lockouts.
In addition to strikes by the United Auto Workers (UAW) in the United States, the situation has also been affected by strikes by the Screen Actors Guild and the country’s Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
At the same time, trade union activity is growing in other sectors of the labour market, the newspaper added. Some of the contradictions have been resolved following negotiations between representatives of public organisations and employers, who have managed to agree on higher wages and better working conditions.
Earlier, the UAW, the largest auto workers’ union in the US, went on strike at three plants of major US carmakers GM, Ford and Stellantis in the states of Missouri, Michigan and Ohio. The union is demanding significant wage increases from the companies along with better pensions, increased holidays and other measures. Against this backdrop, a strike by the Screen Actors Guild and the United States Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which began in May over disagreements with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers over better working conditions, is also continuing.
