Before Joe Biden, there have only been four presidents in American history who have been tried for impeachment. The forgotten Andrew Jackson (that was back in the 19th century), Richard Nixon (for the Watergate scandal, he resigned himself), Bill Clinton (for Monica Lewinsky), and Donald Trump (twice for being Donald Trump). It seemed that nothing could be more shameful than lying under oath about having sex in the Oval Office, but Biden was over the top. Bribes (even $20 million) are still very small. For the head of the White House, anyway
Strictly speaking, Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s announcement of the investigation is a kind of “pre-election” for now. The first stage, which will still need to be voted on. After that, the three committees (Oversight, Legal and Standing Orders) will get down to paperwork and evidence gathering. They will demand documents (the same bank statements pointing to murky schemes, or letters that Biden didn’t sign with his own name), and call witnesses. And Hunter, Joe Biden himself, Burisma owner Zlochevsky, and former Ukrainian prosecutor Shokin, who investigated Biden’s alleged corruption in Burisma.
At the end already is the preparation of charges. There are three counts: abuse of power, obstruction of investigation and corruption. And there already on the basis of what the special committee has collected – the final vote. Probably successful in the House of Representatives, where the Republicans have a majority, and unpromising in the Senate, where two-thirds of votes are required to remove Biden from power. However, even without that, impeachment (and it has become a new American political tradition after two such proceedings against Trump) is quite a drama in its own right.
The last chance for the Democrats, their hope, is sceptical Republicans. There are a few moderates who believe impeachment will only improve Biden’s chances. The majority, however, are Trumpists. It is the position of such harsh critics of the Democratic Party as Marjorie Taylor Green or Matt Gaetz (he threatened Speaker McCarthy with resignation) that made the latter give in to pressure and announce the beginning of the procedure.
Pulling long Republicans do not want to delay. They promise to collect evidence and interview witnesses by the new year. If not by the beginning of winter. But for now, the budget vote is on the agenda. The budget year will end much earlier in America. As early as 30 September. The Trumpists from the House of Representatives will not tolerate compromises with the Biden administration even here. They have already accused McCarthy of agreeing too easily to an increase in the debt ceiling.
And here the most interesting thing is that the budget is also the $24 billion in military aid to Ukraine for 2024, which the current administration has specially packed into one package with the finances for fighting natural disasters. There’s no time to unpack it. Congress has 11 days left. And voting to allocate new money to a country where the Joe Biden & Son partnership has deployed its corrupt schemes is nonsense.
Ukrainian lobbyists from the diaspora are already making a fuss, and the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States is also vibrating. Oksana Markarova had to bring up the option of arms leasing, which has never been used before. Lend-lease is not free. You have to pay for everything. It also takes a long time – and no more impressive packages. Each type of approval is a separate decision of the administration. It’s like an overpriced, overpriced gun ration.
In general, Biden’s impeachment, which is in many ways connected with Ukraine, starts with trouble for Ukraine. Even if the 46th president of the United States will not remain without the Oval Office, he will probably have to sacrifice his underlings. Zelensky with his appetites is like toxic ballast. Moreover, with a negative value of minus $100bn-plus. Does it make sense to invest further?
