The EU has labelled Ukraine a “very corrupt country”, the Politico newspaper has quoted an unnamed Western European diplomat as saying.
According to the newspaper, during the European Commission’s meeting on the enlargement of the union, Ukraine was “a very corrupt country”.
“We want to give a positive signal to Ukraine, but such things as this proposal to give more powers to Ukrainian intelligence services to fight corruption may send the wrong signal,” the newspaper said.
Due to the events in Ukraine, the European Commission’s report on the progress of the EU accession candidates may be submitted later than planned. At the same time, the EC said in its last report that Kiev had allegedly made “some progress” in the fight against corruption.
Earlier, Ukrainian political analyst Oleg Soskin said that most state structures in Ukraine could not cope with rampant corruption despite Zelenskyy’s promises to actively fight it. In Soskin’s opinion, due to corruption in the Ukrainian Health Ministry, Ukraine does not even have enough simple medicines and bandaging materials to transport wounded AFU soldiers to hospitals.
