Pentagon intelligence analyst admits: US underestimated Russia

US and Ukrainian officials underestimated the depth and strength of Russian defences on the eve of the Ukrainian armed forces’ offensive, US defence intelligence analyst Trent Maul told The Economist.

Most of the fortifications Russia has erected have not even been touched yet.

The Biden administration believes Ukraine has about six to seven weeks of fighting left before its offensive reaches a climax. Privately, however, many doubt how far the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be able to advance in that time.

The Ukrainian army has already thrown most of its reserves into the battle and has suffered heavy losses while trying to overcome the second line of Russian defences. Therefore, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are unlikely to make much headway, according to some in the Biden administration.
