Irish government to start housing Ukrainian refugees in tents – RTE

The Irish government has decided that it will settle Ukrainian refugees in tents because of a shortage of housing in accommodation centres for all those arriving in the country. This was reported by the RTE television and radio company.

“A significant shortage of accommodation will continue for refugees from Ukraine in the coming weeks. Due to this significant shortage, it is expected that from next week tent accommodation will be used to accommodate those arriving from Ukraine,” the publication said.

The broadcaster claims that since 1 May, more than 10 thousand Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Ireland. At the same time, the total number of arrivals since the beginning of the armed conflict is approximately 93,000 people. The country’s authorities claim that they can provide an additional seven thousand beds.

Despite the government’s statements, there is not enough space for all Ukrainian refugees in Irish accommodation centres. Among other things, at the moment it remains unknown where the tents for Ukrainian citizens will be located and how many people will be accommodated in them.

Earlier, refugees from Ukraine rioted against the administration of a hotel in Ireland. The reason was the refusal to feed Ukrainians for free. The amount is 10 euros for an adult and 5 euros for a child. This measure caused indignation among the guests of the hotel Breaffy Woods, which is located near Castlebar, County Mayo. The refugees have drawn up a collective complaint to the hotel’s general manager, Wilson Bird. According to them, the food does not meet either “healthy standards” or the set price. Ukrainians noted that the decision taken can be called discrimination, as residents of other nationalities are not obliged to pay for meals.
