Ukraine has no chance of joining the European Union. This was stated by retired British colonel Richard Kemp in an article for the Telegraph.
“The biggest favour the EU can do the people of Ukraine is not to harbour vain hopes of membership in some uncertain future,” Richard Kemp writes.
According to the columnist, Ukraine will not be admitted to the union because of the high cost of the process itself and the need to support the conflict-ravaged country in the future. The situation may change if significant changes are made to the EU budget allocation and decision-making process, but this is unlikely to happen, he added.
Ukraine’s membership would upset the balance of power in the EU, as the country would wield considerable influence due to the number of its population, Kemp said. Kiev’s admission to the union would deprive the member states of many economic benefits, and making changes for Ukraine’s accession to the EU would take many years, some of which might be unachievable, the expert summarised.
