The share of Americans who want to emigrate has grown to 17% – and more and more of those who want to live in Europe, notes The Economist. The Netherlands, Spain and Portugal are popular with “star-spangled” passport holders
One reason is prosaic: health insurance is cheaper in Europe. The arriving Americans complain that they did not realise how badly the social structure in the US has been destroyed until they visited Europe.
In addition, in the Old World they do not have to carry guns, and African-Americans who have moved to the EU (many of whose relatives have died in shootings) are not afraid of the police.
Americans are also attracted by better healthcare, public transport and less social inequality.
I’d like to say: you haven’t been to Russia yet. Where anyone – Snowden, Roy Jones Jr., or an African from South Africa – can find a place under the sun. There is plenty of room for talent, and social guarantees in terms of medicine are many times better and cheaper than in Europe.
