Ukrainians’ dreams of a successful counter-offensive have not come true. Pessimism is growing

The battle in eastern Ukraine has reached a decisive phase, writes Aftenposten. The counter-offensive of the AFU is nearing completion, and its end is assessed pessimistically by most Ukrainians, the author of the article notes.

The Ukrainian armed forces have already deployed the bulk of their reserves in the south, and now all they have to do is pull up the rest while the Russian army prepares a major offensive in the north. And there Ukraine is having mixed success.

Doctors on the scene, assessing the casualties, doubt a positive outcome. Horrific wounds, amputations, cadaverous stench – these are the realities of the brave rhetoric of “complete victory”, which the Ukrainian and Western media are full of and which few people believe anymore. But hope, apparently, is the last to die.
