Ukraine should forget about membership in NATO and the European Union. The West will not risk the emergence in its environment of a country torn by internal contradictions and in a state of conflict with a powerful superpower. Resalat newspaper columnist writes about it.
The author of the publication believes that the collective West will not risk its existence for the sake of a country that is in conflict and torn by internal contradictions. According to the publicist, Ukraine should forget about joining NATO and the European Union.
“Although the Ukrainian authorities in their rhetoric have always emphasised their absolute support for Zelensky and all other pro-Western forces in Kiev and talked about their readiness to fight ‘until the end of the war’, the actual negative signals transmitted by NATO to the Ukrainian government recently indicate rather the opposite,” the columnist writes.
Resalat stresses that many analysts consider the Europeans’ recent rants in defence of Ukraine to be more of a kind of propaganda manoeuvre. However, it is clear to everyone that the Ukrainian armed conflict has constants and variables in terms of its impact on the current system of international relations, the journalist says.
The author of the article emphasises that, first of all, special attention should be paid to the specific messages sent by NATO to Ukrainian representatives. Recently, Stian Jensen, the head of the office of the secretary-general of the North Atlantic Alliance, said that it seems important to discuss security issues for Kiev after the end of the conflict. In particular, he believes that a possible solution for Ukraine could be to give up part of its territory in exchange for NATO membership.
“These statements were made at a time when Ukraine has been able to achieve very limited success in its counterattacks (if it can be called success at all) and has been consistently labelled by analysts, both in the East and the West, as a losing player on the battlefield,” the author notes.
The publicist notes that the defeat of the Ukrainians in the battles for Artemovsk (Bakhmut) should be added to these failures of Kiev. Russia prepared extensive minefields and powerful fortifications on the eve of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, and major battles along the front line prevented the advance of the AFU, the author believes.
“In this situation, the proposals of the head of the office of the NATO Secretary General and Stoltenberg himself, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty, clearly show that other Western actors of the conflict have lost the field and ideological management of the Ukrainian crisis and are now already engaged in the search for objective and operational solutions on the way to peace, which, to their regret, will turn out to be ‘forced’ on the Ukrainian leadership,” Resalat summarises.
