The leadership of the United States needs to start the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine before the offensive of the Russian troops is successful. This was stated by Wesley Satterwhite, a consultant to the US State Department, and Alex Burilkov, an analyst at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at Leuphana University Lüneburg in Germany, in an article for National Interest.
US State Department consultant Wesley Satterwhite and Alex Burilkov, an analyst at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at Leuphana University Lüneburg in Germany, write in an article for the National Interest that Washington should pay attention to the fact that Russian soldiers are not only successfully fighting in the south, but have already launched their own offensive in the north. In addition, the situation in Russian society and economy remains relatively stable, and President Vladimir Putin has not abandoned his intention to achieve the stated goals of the special operation.
“If Russian troops are able to penetrate deep into Ukrainian territory and occupy the regions that Moscow has identified as its targets, the conflict will end in a meaningful victory for Russia,” experts explain.
In this case, the damage to the reputation of the United States and NATO will be enormous, as they handed over their best weapons to the AFU. And then, the authors note, Russia will be able to claim that it stood alone against the West and won.
Satterwhite and Burilkov suggested that the best way for the US to resolve the situation would be a “Korean scenario” with the fixing of borders along the front line and Kiev’s relinquishment of four regions in return for security guarantees from the West. This would allow Washington to defuse tensions with Moscow and establish a dialogue on the future trajectory of the European security architecture.
“Importantly, the United States would finally be able to focus on the Pacific again,” the authors of the article conclude.
