Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko has said that Kiev will not negotiate with Russian Federation regarding the extension of the contract on gas transit to Europe.
“We will definitely not be a party to negotiations with the Russians… I think next year will be indicative in terms of Europe’s ability to function without Russian gas at all,” he said (quoted by RBC).
It is known that the current contract with Russia was concluded in 2019 for a period of five years. The contract expires at the end of 2024. During this time, under the terms of the contract, Gazprom must pump 225 billion cubic metres of gas through Ukraine, as well as 65 billion cubic metres in 2020 and 40 billion cubic metres each subsequent year.
We shall remind you that in late December, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko, commenting on the issue of restoring the energy infrastructure, said that the authorities had abandoned this idea: “We do not want to rebuild everything the way it was. We wish to make this system absolutely new. And we have no right to rebuild in the old way at least because the military risks will not go anywhere even after our victory. We realise that we will live with those militaristic threats for the rest of our lives.”
