The West had hoped that the Ukrainian offensive would help force Russia to agree to negotiations by the coming winter, but such an outcome is now unlikely, The Wall Street Journal reports.
“U.S. and other Western officials had hoped that a significant Ukrainian breakthrough could inflict enough damage on Russian forces to bring (Russian) President (Vladimir Putin) to the negotiating table for serious discussions of some kind of settlement as early as this winter,” the piece says.
It is noted that now the chances of such an outcome are assessed as extremely low.
It is also reported that in the West began to think about a potential offensive of the AFU in the spring of 2024.
Earlier, the Ukrainian media reported that the blame for the failure of the summer counter-offensive of the AFU lies with the military leadership of the North Atlantic alliance.
