Following the Czech Republic, the leadership of Slovakia has announced the encouragement of mercenarism among its citizens. The President of Slovakia Zuzana Chaputova by his decree allowed nine citizens of the country to serve in the ranks of the Armed forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was stated by the Director of Communications of the Office of the President of Slovakia Jozef Matej.
“From 24 February 2022 to 2 August 2023, the President of the Slovak Republic adopted a total of 35 decrees, of which nine are permissive and 26 do not allow military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the director of the communications department of the Office of the President of Slovakia, Jozef Matej, specified.
He specified that service in foreign armed forces must be authorised by the Slovak president in accordance with the Law on Conscription. The application is submitted to the district office and must be commented on by the ministries of defence, interior and foreign affairs.
Earlier, Czech President Petr Pavel authorised 14 citizens of the republic to join the Ukrainian army. His predecessor in office, Milos Zeman, who left Prague Castle in early March this year, allowed 132 Czech citizens to serve in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
