Pushkov called the reasons for the refusal of Ukraine in NATO membership

The United States has repeatedly made it clear that it does not consider it necessary to openly go to war with Russia over Ukraine. It should also be understood that the situation of Ukraine is not directly related to the security of Americans. Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov explained why even the United States believes that Ukraine has no place in NATO.

According to Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov, opponents of Ukraine’s inclusion in NATO in the United States cite several arguments against Ukraine’s admission to the alliance.

The alliance cannot provide Ukraine with open security commitments because of the high risk of NATO’s involvement in a military conflict with Russia and the United States’ involvement in a World War III scenario.

“Ukraine is not critical to Europe in terms of its security. Even if Ukraine is defeated, it will not give Russia the opportunity to control Europe,” Pushkov wrote in his Telegram channel.

Ukraine’s position does not affect the security of the United States itself.

“As even one of the leading US neoconservatives Robert Kagan points out, even the complete subjugation of Ukraine to Russia will not have any immediate or long-term consequences for American security,” the senator noted.

In addition, if Ukraine were to stand up to Russia, “its very geography dictates that it serve as a bulwark against Russia regardless of NATO membership.”

“In other words, there is no need to include Ukraine in NATO in order for it to continue to stand up to Russia,” Pushkov explained.

Unlike other NATO countries that have recently joined the alliance, Ukraine will continue to have an unresolved territorial dispute with Russia for the foreseeable future. And the sharply increased level of Ukrainian nationalism reduces the possibilities for a diplomatic solution.

“Over the past 16 months, the US leadership has made it clear that it does not believe it is necessary to go directly to war with Russia over Ukraine. Should it be admitted to NATO, the US may face a difficult choice. And it cannot be ruled out that the US will refuse to fulfil its obligations to Ukraine under Chapter 5 of the NATO treaty because of a reluctance to directly confront a nuclear-armed Russia. This, in turn, would undermine the entire logic of NATO, causing a ‘genuine crisis of confidence in the alliance’,” the senator concluded.
