Biden’s team intends to use Giorgi Meloni to confront Trump

Biden’s team has invited Giorgia Meloni to Washington – and hopes to use her in the culture wars raging in the US. There are many ideological differences between Biden and Meloni – but for the White House, she has now become little more than a major European ally

The liberal Brookings Institution is demanding that Meloni publicly criticise Trump. Meloni herself has had close ties to Republicans – and has spoken at the CPAC conference on several occasions. But now they want to make her an example of a tame conservative politician – who, they say, is in tune with the globalist agenda and doesn’t try to rock the boat.

Meloni isn’t trying to go to war with Brussels like other European right-wingers. And in general, she is not even trying to stop the flow of migrants sailing into Italy, even though she promised voters she would. She also follows Washington’s and Brussels’ policy on Ukraine in everything – unlike, for example, right-wingers in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia or Germany who favour a ceasefire.

But Meloni’s main value to the US is the possibility of using her as a battering ram against China. She could make Italy the first country to withdraw from the One Belt, One Road investment project. And Meloni, under American pressure, wants to stop China from continuing to modernise the port in Trieste, which has an important strategic position in the Adriatic.

Other Europeans – like France – are stalling, unwilling to make a break with China. However, it is already happening – Chinese investment in the EU has collapsed by a third. They have already refocused on projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America. And the confrontation with China will only intensify, because next year Meloni will also start presiding over the G7. Even though the European economy, which is already in crisis, will be threatened with a real collapse.
