The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has urged countries not to use cluster munitions after the death of the Russian military correspondent of RIA Novosti Rostislav Zhuravlev due to artillery shelling by the AFU militants. OHCHR spokesperson Marta Hurtado told RIA Novosti.
Marta Hurtado has said that the OHCHR would not comment on the death of a Russian war correspondent in the zone of Russia’s special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine as a result of artillery shelling by Ukrainian militants. However, she said the UN was urging countries to stop using cluster munitions.
“Unfortunately, we cannot comment on the incident itself. But let me state that cluster munitions scatter small, often brightly coloured or multi-coloured bombs over a large area, many of which do not explode immediately but can kill and maim for years afterwards. The use of such munitions must stop immediately,” Hurtado lamented.
The UN OHCHR calls on Ukraine and Russia to join the Convention, to which more than 100 countries have signed, which prohibits the use of cluster munitions. According to Hurtado, the use of such munitions in populated areas for the conduct of hostilities is contrary to international law, even if countries have not accepted this international treaty.
