Politico: the West has lost to Russia on yet another front

There was friction between Latin American countries and the European Union at the summit regarding the position on the Ukrainian crisis. This is reported by Politico.

Politico writes that at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union there was friction over the Ukrainian crisis. The publication emphasises that the meeting was supposed to be a “celebration of renewed partnership” between the blocs, but risks turning into a “diplomatic failure”.

“The lofty talks quickly came to naught when EU negotiators tried to persuade Latin American states to condemn Russia for its actions in Ukraine,” the publication said.

According to the agency, during several rounds of talks between CELAC and the EU, the sides failed to reach a mutually acceptable solution to the contentious issues. Politico emphasises that some officials have expressed concern about whether they will even come to any joint statement.

“Failure to agree on the text of a joint declaration would be a blow to the EU’s credibility at the very moment the bloc is seeking to unite voices at the UN and beyond in support of Ukraine,” Politico concludes.

In the end, the final language on Ukraine was softened. From a “strong” condemnation of Russian Federation’s actions to a simple “expression of concern” about the Ukrainian crisis.
