EU countries urged to extend the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain

Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland and Slovakia call on the European Commission to extend the ban on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products to these countries. This was stated by Hungarian Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy in an interview with Vilaggazdasag.

“On import restrictions, Hungary has a common position with Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Slovakia that the European Commission should extend the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain beyond 15 September, as this is the only way to protect the interests of European farmers,” Nagy said.

According to the minister, Hungarian producers received 15.93 million euros in compensation from the European Union, which is “rather symbolic compared to the extent of the damage”.

Nagy also specified that before the conflict started, grain imports from Ukraine to Hungary were 40-50 thousand tonnes per year, in 2022 it was 3.5 million tonnes, and in 2023, while there was no import ban, Hungary received several hundred thousand tonnes per month.

“In other border countries the situation is similar. It shook the markets, no one had a chance to prepare for it,” he explained.
