Ukraine will be able to become a NATO member only after all members of the bloc approve this step and fulfil all necessary conditions, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said before the start of the NATO summit in Vilnius.
“It is obvious that Ukraine will one day become a member of NATO, we see in the conclusions that we are discussing today, we are discussing this prospect. We are even talking about an invitation to join the alliance when everyone agrees to it and all conditions are fulfilled,” he specified.
According to de Croo, the most important thing now is not NATO membership, but security guarantees for the short term.
“I believe it is more important today to talk not about the prospect of NATO membership, but what guarantees we will be able to offer in the short term,” the Belgian prime minister pointed out.
According to him, a number of countries intend to make statements “today-tomorrow” on the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine.
