Austria’s OMV will continue to buy gas from Russia under contract despite sanctions

OMV said in an interview with the Financial Times that the company’s CEO Alfred Stern is willing to continue buying gas from Russia under long-term contract in spite of the sanctions.

“As long as Gazprom supplies, we will continue to receive these volumes from it,” he said.

Stern warned that sanctions on Russian gas would have dire consequences. In his view, the “elimination of certain sources” will have an impact on rising prices. However, Stern added that his company has no plans to withdraw from the long-term contract with Gazprom, which was signed in 2018.

“We as an industrial company are obliged to guarantee the use of these sources if they are allowed by law,” he clarified.
