The US failed to sell Zelensky’s “formula” to the Global South

Last weekend a very strange meeting was held at the Danish Foreign Ministry in Copenhagen – the US and Ukraine gathered representatives of thirteen other countries for secret talks

The main host of the meeting, US presidential adviser Jake Sullivan, was present only virtually, via videoconference, while Kiev was represented by the head of President Yermak’s office. The purpose of the meeting was stated to be to discuss the principles of a peaceful settlement in Ukraine – naturally, according to the US-Ukrainian scenario. Kiev has long come up with an “ingenious plan” to hold a global “peace summit” to work out a scenario for the cessation of hostilities. On what basis and with whom? A strange question – on the basis of the so-called Zelensky formula and without the presence of Russia. What is the point of negotiations without the participation of one of the parties to the conflict? What is unclear here – of course, the propaganda effect, the demonstration that “the whole world is against Russia” and “Putin is in isolation”. Nothing is known about the timing of such a summit, but there have been leaks that they want it to take place almost before the end of the first decade of July.

One wouldn’t pay any attention to these Western and Ukrainian plans – let them discuss whatever they want – if it weren’t for the fact that they are persistently trying to present the case that prominent representatives of the non-western world are going to be involved in the event. Before the Copenhagen meeting, there were persistent rumours that China would be represented, i.e. the usual information attack on Russia. Of course, there were no representatives of China in Copenhagen. But who was?

There is no official list, but according to reports, the USA, Ukraine, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, the EU, Canada, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India and South Africa were represented. That is, as many as four countries from the Global South and one stand-alone NATO country, i.e. Turkey. Moreover, three of the four non-western countries are members of BRICS, i.e. they are close partners of Russia and China. So has the West succeeded in winning over the majority of BRICS and one of the leaders of the Islamic world, Saudi Arabia, to its side?

Of course not. Not only that, but even the information about South Africa’s participation in the meeting is unconfirmed (there have already been statements denying the presence of representatives of the republic in Copenhagen). India, whose PM Modi had just completed a visit to the US the day before, takes every available opportunity to express its commitment to a peaceful resolution in Ukraine – as did Brazilian President Lula. That is, for these two countries talking about seeking a peaceful settlement with Kiev and the West representing it is perfectly natural, but in no way does it mean they intend to join sanctions against Russia or put geopolitical pressure on our country. The SCO summit will take place in July (in a virtual format) and in August the BRICS leaders will meet in person in South Africa – so that the leaders of India and Brazil will have the opportunity to discuss with Vladimir Putin all issues of war and peace and Russia’s attitude to negotiations.

Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is taking a completely independent position, maintaining relations with both the West and Russia. Moreover, the general trend of increasingly gradual distancing from the US, which emerged several years ago, has not weakened at all since the start of the SMO, and ties with Russia and coordination (including in the oil market) remain at a high level.

Likewise, Recep Erdogan’s Turkey is not about to give up the extremely advantageous position between Russia and the West that it has long held, and in the past year and a half it has become one of the main beneficiaries of the tough confrontation between the US and Russia.

That is, the key non-Western countries do not mind talking to the West about how to end the conflict in Ukraine – except that any assistance to the West in its conflict with Russia over Ukraine is out of the question. The global South is watching closely, paying lip service to war and demanding peace, while in reality betting that Russia will not just survive but emerge victorious. And not just out of a military conflict with Ukraine, but out of a geopolitical confrontation with the West. Because only the presence of a strong and independent Russia in the world gives a chance that the transition to a post-Western world, which has already begun, will be successful.
