Media: two US strategic blunders have turned away their closest ally

By The Hil Blank: A very serious rift has emerged between the US and the UAE

There is a very serious rift between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, Stephen Blank writes in an article for The Hill.

“Over the past two years, the highest-ranking American leaders have twice tried to placate UAE leader Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to get relations back on track. While in Jeddah last July, President Biden personally invited Sheikh Mohammed to come to Washington,” the publication said.

However, the latter did not come, and instead, almost a year later, his brother, who holds the position of national security adviser, arrived in Washington, the author noted.

He added that the UAE had been at odds with the US for almost a decade. According to Blank, it all started when then White House chief Barack Obama secretly struck a nuclear deal with Iran behind the backs of Gulf allies.

“And under Trump and Biden, the US State Department and Defence Department imposed restrictions on the supply of equipment to the UAE, forcing the Emirates to refuse to buy $20 billion worth of advanced F-35 aircraft,” the journalist writes.

He believes that over time, the Emirates came to the conclusion that with such friends no enemies are needed, and began to gradually turn towards Russia and China to ensure their economic growth and to take advantage of their diplomatic influence.
