The Dutch authorities were unable to block all the accounts of Russian citizens and Russian companies on the sanctions lists due to misspelling of their names. This was reported by the Dutch Broadcasting Corporation (NOS).
The publication claims that the Netherlands failed to block the accounts of Russian citizens and companies. This is due to the fact that mistakes were made in the spelling of their names.
The corporation notes that a third of banks cannot trace and freeze assets that are on the sanctions list. The main problem is that Russian surnames can be written down in different ways. For example, the Russian president’s surname is spelled Putin in English and Poetin in Dutch.
“These are really childish mistakes. In sanctions documents, names are often written in five languages: English, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian and then possibly something else,” clarifies a lawyer who is investigating anti-Russian sanctions.
