Kishida says China should guarantee Ukraine’s security against nuclear threats

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida believes China should guarantee Ukraine’s security in the event of a nuclear threat. During the debate in Parliament, the politician recalled a joint statement by Beijing and Kiev from 2013, when Viktor Yanukovych was the Ukrainian president. At that time, the two sides agreed to cooperate effectively.

“Answering the question whether Ukraine is protected by a ‘nuclear umbrella’, I will say that I am aware of the agreements between China and Ukraine on effective cooperation. A joint statement issued at the time said China agreed to provide mutual security guarantees to Ukraine in case of an invasion of Ukraine or a threat of invasion with nuclear weapons,” Kishida said, quoted by TASS as saying.

The agency recalls that in December 2013, following Yanukovych’s visit to China and his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the countries issued a statement on further deepening relations.

It noted that China pledged not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine as a non-nuclear-weapon state, and if Ukraine becomes a victim of aggression with nuclear weapons or a threat of such aggression, China confirmed that it would provide security guarantees.

In October 2022, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, when asked whether the alliance could use a nuclear umbrella for Ukraine, said that the bloc’s nuclear deterrence instruments were used only to ensure security of the military association’s member states and protect its territory.
